    Symbiosis Center for Media & Communication(SCMC), since its inception in 2008, has been successful in carving a niche for itself in the field of Media and Communication.
    Ranked as the Best Mass Communication College across the country by an India Today survey in 2013, it is one of the most preferred destinations amongst media schools for aspirants to attain a distinct place in this fast thriving sector.
    A massive expansion of media leading to a revolution, has transformed passive users into media creators. The face of traditional media is undergoing a makeover; whereby citizens can become active participants in contributing their notions and opinions. We believe in harnessing this potential armed with the immense power of technology in keeping with our goals to communicate, connect and converge.
    Our programme, Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication), a three years full time course, offers a comprehensive understanding through traditional academic learning coupled with research from cyber and experiential learning.

  • 2What is the programme offered by SCMC?

    Programme offered –

    Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication)
    The full-time programme is spread over a period of three years, and spaced out over six semesters of six months each, incorporating theoretical lectures, hands-on practical sessions, tutorials, classroom presentations, take-home assignments, sporting & cultural events, field trips, study tours, projects, internships.

    Journalism in Print, Electronic & Cyber Media
    Audio-Visual Production including Radio & Television Production, Advertising & Documentary Film-making and Film Studies
    Advertising including Client Servicing, Account Planning, Media and Creative - Copy & Visual

  • 3What is the selection procedure for SCMC?

    First Round – SET (Symbiosis Entrance Test) is a common objective written entrance test conducted by Symbiosis for graduate programmes. It is the first step in seeking admission to Symbiosis Center of Media & Communication. Candidates are shortlisted for the second round on the basis of SET scores. SCMC gives a varied weightage to SET components and does not go by the aggregate score alone.

    Second Round – The second round consists of assignments, subjective written test, group discussion, personal interview and verification of documents.

  • 4How do I know if I’m eligible to apply?

    Applicants having completed their 10+2 in any discipline from any recognized Board / Council / University with a minimum of 50% (45% for SC/ST) aggregate marks, or equivalent grades, are eligible to seek admission.

    Candidates expecting their 12th results may also apply. Their admission will be provisional and subject to furnishing proof of securing a minimum of 50% (45% for SC/ST) aggregate marks, or equivalent grades, in the same latest by beginning of the Second Semester.

    Failure to furnish proof shall render their admission null and void. No extra time will be given for submission of final mark sheet even in the case of students who have applied for revaluation.

  • 7What is the admission procedure like for international students?

    The Symbiosis Centre for International Education (SCIE) is a department of Symbiosis International University, providing leadership & support for the University's efforts to attain global recognition in the field of media and communications studies.

    With 75 countries represented in the student community, Symbiosis is a leading example of confluence and integration of international cultures, traditions, ideas and experiences. The effect of this distinct advantage goes beyond campus and classroom interactions, as the students and faculty are repeatedly provided with opportunities to pursue their international academic interests to the fullest. Be it through academic exchanges or exposure to international conferences, seminars, workshops, etc, Symbiosis stands for sharing of knowledge and experience beyond the borders of regions and countries.

    International Students Admission, Events & Support Services

    The International Students Admissions at Symbiosis Centre for International Education is designed taking into consideration the requirements and difficulties faced by International Students. The admissions are centralized for all the constituent institutes of Symbiosis International University and routed through Symbiosis Centre for International Education (SCIE). The online admission procedure has made it accessible to each and every student from different parts of the world and in the comfort of their homes.

    Categories under International Students Admissions:

    Foreign National (FN)

    A student is eligible to apply as a Foreign National (FN) if he / she holds a foreign passport.

    Person of Indian Origin (PIO)

    A student is eligible to apply as a Person of Indian Origin (PIO) if he /she has a PIO card, and is a citizen of a country other than India.

    Non Resident Indian (NRI)

    (At Undergraduate Level)
    A student is eligible to apply as a Non Resident Indian (NRI) if he / she has appeared either for the 10 or 10+2 (equivalent to the Indian 10th & 12th) examination outside India.

    It is mandatory for the students who falls in the NRI Category and have appeared for 12th in India to appear for the SET TEST.

  • 8What is the infrastructure that will be available to me as a student of SCMC during my 3-year course?

    Seminar Halls – These are provided with overhead LCD projectors and public-address systems.

    Screening Rooms – These are acoustically sealed, split air-conditioned mini-auditoriums with wall-to-wall carpeting and provided with overhead LCD projection systems and Dolby / DTS 7.1 surround sound system.

    Audio-Visual Studio – A shooting floor along with a Production Control Room. The same is equipped with multiple digital cameras (five Panasonic DVX102 & four MD Panasonic 10000 cameras) and multi-channel digital mixers. Lighting equipment includes overhead moveable lighting grid, cool floods, spotlights & shadow caster.

    Post-Production Suite – Five air-conditioned cubicles, as well as a post production laboratory, are equipped with non-linear edit systems to meet the students’ editing needs. The same has the following facilities : four Mac Pro with FCP and 10 iMac with Adobe Premier CS5. Additional software includes Nundeo 5.0, Sound Forge 7.0 & FCE.


    Photography Studio – The air-conditioned photography studio combines both manual and digital facilities. It has a darkroom with enlarger for manual D&P, as well as computers with contemporary software for digital imagery. The studio is equipped with professional lights, SLR cameras and other essential equipment.

    Computer Laboratory – The air-conditioned computer laboratory has 39 terminals equipped with Pentium IV processor driven CPUs connected to LCD screens / overhead LCD projector. The laboratory is fully networked and provides high-speed broadband connectivity, with power back-up. A variety of Publishing, Post Production and Design Technology software are available. The entire campus is Wi-Fi enabled.

    Library – The library has a well-stocked collection acquired since its inception, and covering a broad span of technical and non-technical subjects pertaining to mass media and communication management. A computerised cataloguing system provides instant access facility for any book, by title, author, publisher, or ISBN number. The library also subscribes to a wide assortment of national and international newspapers, magazines and journals, besides some other publications.

    Audio-Visual Library – The audio-visual library has a comprehensive collection of films, documentaries, radio & television programmes in English, Hindi and other Foreign / Regional languages. Workstations are available to access these films at any time during working hours.

     

  • 9What are the recreational facilities that are available to students of SCMC?

    Health Club –

    A health centre and fitness club (Gymnasium, Aerobics Floor, Yogshala), is situated on the campus for students, which is open during working hours, with state-of-the-art equipment.

    Sports –
    Football, Cricket, Basketball, Volleyball, etc.

    Hostel –
    Separate hostels for boys and girls are situated near the campus building.

  • 10What are the extra-curricular clubs that students can participate in?

    Print And Cyber Club

    Sticking to the model of convergence, the print world and the cyber world come together. With both a paper version and an online version, the journalists are in full flow with no event or fact going unnoticed. It also provides the perfect learning ground for future journalists to hone their skills and prepare themselves.

    Photography Club

    The shutterbugs are on the loose. The Photography club is all over the campus with no corner and no camera technique left untouched. The city of Pune offers the perfect environment for the Club to take the best of photographs. From advanced learning sessions to actual practical units, the club is always active and clicking away.

    Radio Club

    The primary function of the club is to produce the hourly show Symbi FM broadcast over Radio One. Apart from that it is planning to set up Campus Radio in the Viman Nagar campus. The club is also working on an online version.

    Film & Television Club

    The curtain never closes on the Film & Television Club at campus. With constant screenings, discussions, workshops and active participation in filmmaking the members of this club are always active. The Film & Television Club also sends student entries to various fests and award ceremonies to contend for top honours.

    Ad & Design Club

    Ideas galore. That’s what the Ad & Design Club at SCMC exemplifies. With budding copywriters and graphic designers all coming together under one name, the club performs various activities like Brand quizzes, discussions, brainstorming sessions and many more such related tasks. The club simulates the industry atmosphere and prepares the students to enter the field and ease right in.

    PR & Events Club

    Smooth, suave and smart. The PR & Events club has all of this and more in abundance. These young PR professionals embark on tasks like mock press conferences, event preparations, organising seminars and other related activities. They maintain and handle media relations for the college.

    Event management is the new buzzword and we are not slow to catch on. The PR & Events Club makes sure that campus is always buzzing with some event or activity. This provides hands on experience to students about how things work in the industry and the pressures that come along with organising a successful event.

    Culture & Theatre Club

    Dance, music, literary activities and a whole lot more. The Culture & Theatre Club at SCMC is unique from all others for the sheer amount of talent that gathers under one name. From taking part in competitions and outstation fests, the club does a lot on campus as well such as organising various events and encouraging people to showcase their talent. One of the most sought after clubs, the culture club is a true amalgamation of talent.

    Rehearsed to perfection, boundless emotion and never-ending energy. The Culture & Theatre Club at SCMC has been born with such qualities. The club attracts the best talents on stage, encouraging active participation. Acting workshops with prominent personalities add to the value of the club.

  • 13What is the ‘Internship Cell’?

    Students, in order to supplement classroom learning with on-field exposure generally take up internships between the semesters. As a part of the project module, the students are required to do three development sector internships, two industry internships and one institute activity.
    A development sector internship provides students with direct exposure to issues at the grassroot level and provides them with the experience required for sensitized media professionals. Industry internships provide students with direct exposure to the media industry and help them hone their skill set and provide them with work experience.

    Soon after the commencement of the second semester, an internship cell is selected from amongst the students which will give leadership to the internship process. In the fourth semester, a student council will be selected which will aid the internships and placement process as well as conduction of institute activities. The council assimilates data and handles communication under the supervision of the Director. The selection of the internship is generally based on students’ attitude, aptitude, and academic performance and in certain cases, a mock interview.

  • 14What is the ‘Placement Cell’?

    Symbiosis Center of Media and Communication(SCMC) has an elected body of individuals who form a dedicated Placement Cell. These elected students represent the students and mediate the placement process with the industry and organizations. Efforts to ensure a successful placement season are made from the beginning by generating an exhaustive database of organizations where the students have completed their internships and also by sharing opportunities with students. Formal communications regarding the placements are effectively managed by the Placement Cell to ensure that the repute and image of the institute is duly maintained in the industry which could result in better placement opportunities.
